This Pentecost two Liturgies took place to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit, the birthday of the church; one in maroubra and the other in our Centre in Springwood. Technology failed us in that Br Luke left the portable modem in his glove box and so Jessica and Br Andrew Celebrated together in Maroubra.

The Blue Mountains Franciscan Church

 Sermon preached by Br Andrew

at Maroubra on Sunday 15th May 2016.

The Feast of Pentecost

Readings: Acts 2:1-21; Psalms 104: 26-36;Romans 8:14-17;John 14:8-27

Our Gospel readings continues Jesus Discourse to his disciples and the topic is Oneness, Unity, the very Nature of Christ.

The” Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’”is used by St. Francis in the First Admonition to speak of Eucharist but here Jesus is battling to have his disciples understand that ” If you have seen me you have seen the father” that both Jesus and the Father are One.

Considering the day the Church celebrates today the important message is about the “Advocate” to be sent by the Father if and only if the Son returns to the Father and when Jesus does so  “On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”

Paul carries this forward into life when he writes

Romans 8:14-17

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Yet it is paramount we remember that this Spirit is the Most Highest God, as St Francis referred to his Lord, for that special indwelling of the Father in the Son, the Son in the Father, the Spirit in both and both in the Spirit and all in us and us in God.

A magical basket weave that is seamless to hold all those things we shall call upon the Spirit to remind us.

Jesus speaks briefly of his Ascension telling them that he shall be gone a little while and shall return but the world will not recognise him aka the Holy Spirit coming with tongues of Fire on the Apostles and disciples at Pentecost.
